The business of making health and fitness accessible

In this episode of Business Matters, presented by Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union, host Rob Cupello is joined by Kelley Taylor, vice president of health, fitness and aquatics at the YMCA Okanagan, to talk about the importance of making health and wellness accessible to everyone in the community.

While you may know the YMCA as a gym and swim facility, the breadth of programs the organization offers is much larger than that. They aim to be a barrier-free fitness organization, making health and wellness accessible to everyone, regardless of income, previous fitness experience or age.

As a charity, the YMCA is able to provide donor-funded programs that go beyond fitness and aquatics classes. From behaviour change coaching to parenting programs to initiatives that help children succeed in school, the YMCA strives to build healthier communities in a holistic way.

“It’s not just about coming in and working out. It’s really about ‘how can the YMCA help you to have the best lifestyle moving forward?’” says Kelley.

In addition to supporting a community-oriented charitable organization, members of the YMCA benefit from high-quality facilities at a sliding-scale rate and the ability to use facilities across the country and even internationally.
